You know, I was chatting with Ron Thurston—he’s spent years building retail teams at places like Bonobos and Saint Laurent—and something he said really stuck with me. He talked about how, in stores, the fitting room is where the magic happens. It’s personal, it’s emotional, and that’s where customers feel truly seen.
It got me thinking about how we often handle things online. We tend to throw every product we have at the shopper, like a giant fire hose of options, hoping they’ll figure it out.
We’ve been fire-hosing people. And calling it discovery.
But think about it: when you’re in a store with a great stylist, they aren’t flooding you with random clothes. They guide you—step by step—so you don’t feel overwhelmed, but instead feel understood.
In luxury retail, they call this the “selling ceremony.” It’s this thoughtful flow where they first understand your shape, your style, and then carefully curate what they show you. It’s intentional, calming—and it works, because it’s about the human, not just the clothes.

On the retail sales floor: having someone in your corner, as your guide, makes all the difference.
So how do we bring a little bit of that online?
We start by guiding, not flooding. Instead of making someone dig through endless pages, we ask them to identify their shape. Once we know that, we curate what they see—just like a stylist would pull the right rack. We can even bring in color guidance, offering shades that flatter, so the whole process feels more like a trusted stylist walking beside you.
When we do that—when we replace that fire hose with a guide—things change.

Imagine: rather than seeing every single women’s denim pant in the brand or category you could filter down to see what fits your body shape best.
Here’s what changes when you get this right
Shoppers buy more confidently, returns drop, and your merchandising gets smarter because you learn what shapes your customers actually love. And let’s be real, it’s more sustainable, too, because you’re not shipping out a bunch of “maybe” items that come straight back.

You don’t have to overhaul everything to start.
Create shape-based collections. Test them in your next email, and watch what happens when customers feel guided instead of overwhelmed.
At the end of the day, we’re not replacing the human magic of a great stylist. We’re bringing that same care to the online space. Because when shoppers feel seen, whether it’s in the fitting room or on a website, that’s where the real connection—and the real business—happens.
